Casting X Spells with cost reducers
Asked by mrrndublebarrel 4 years ago
Let's say i have God-Eternal Kefnet on the battlefield. I draw Torment of Hailfire . I reveal it and pay two black and X=0. The spell costs 2 less to cast from Kefnet's ability. Will X=2 or will it still be X=0?
No. When casting a spell or activating an ability, one of the first things you do is you make the necessary choices, including how large an X you want. Then you calculate how much mana it would cost you to cast the spell using this equation:
Mana cost of the spell + cost additions - cost reductions = actual mana you need to pay
So for this case, if you select X=2, the equation would look like:
mana cost of the spell + cost additions - cost reductions = actual mana to be paid
In the end, you will get to cast a 4 CMC Torment of Hailfire , with x=2, but only pay for it.

If you actually chose X=0 then X=0. In the steps of casting a spell, you choose the value of any X before calculating the total cost.
In this example, if you want X=2 then you would choose X=2 while casting the spell and then calculate the total cost as - =
