Casting Reins of Power during combat

Asked by BlueScope 9 years ago

I've been wondering what happens if you cast Reins of Power after attackers and before blockers have been declared, in the following situations (regarding whether the affected creatures will still be attacking and who):

  1. It's my turn, I attack, then cast Reins
  2. It's an opponents turn, they attack me, I cast Reins
  3. It's an opponents turn, they attack another opponent, I cast Reins
  4. An ability triggers when a creature attacks and I cast Reins in response, assuming the ability involves the creature itself (such as Clockwork Condor) - will the ability still resolve and do what it's supposed to do (remove a counter from the creature, in this case)?

I have a feeling that switching control of creatures will remove them from combat, making all of the above result in the same outcome... but let me make sure nevertheless, as the Gatherer rulings are quite scarce for a special snowflake such as this, in my opinion.

There is indeed a rule that creatures are removed from combat if their controller changes, so this part is simple. Clockwork Condor is an interesting one though. I assume that it would still resolve as normal since there is no interventing if clause about the condor still needing to attack or block for the ability to resolve.

I believe magicnerd0815 is correct about the rules. It would appear Clockwork Condor's ability would trigger based on the wording. Also, they would be removed from combat if they switched controls.
