Casting Gods Willing after Pit Fight resolves, but before fight starts

Asked by Renaud 9 years ago

Opponent casts Pit Fight , targeting his 3/3 green creature and my Hero of Iroas I have a Gods Willing in hand.

I want to allow Pit Fight to resolve, and then give my creature pro green (making it a 3/3 thanks to heroic) and kill his creature.

Is that possible?

I'm assuming I can't... but I've been wrong so many time before :)

You cannot cast a spell during the resolution of another spell, so there's no opportunity to buff your creature once Pit Fight is allowed to resolve. And if you cast Gods Willing and name red or green, your Hero of Iroas is an illegal target for Pit Fight, causing the spell to fizzle.

Your choices are to either name red or green and prevent Pit Fight from resolving, or name black, blue, or white and trade your now 3/3 Hero for their creature.

I doubt it, if you let it resolve then it is too late to boost your Hero, the best you could do is cast it name green and your opponent spell is countered for not having a legal target.

Pit Fight would not be countered upon resolution. It dies resolve but simply does nothing.

GJTanner87 has the most correct answer. The rules about Fight specifically say that a fight won't happen if one of the targets becomes illegal.
