Casting a card bounced with dead reflector mage?

Asked by MorgsJ 7 years ago

If I kill a Reflector Mage can I re-play the creature that was bounced by it on my turn of which if it was still alive I couldn't?

No, abilities are independent of their sources. Even if you remove the source, the restriction on casting will be in effect until its duration expires.

The above answer states only correct things, but some of those don't have anything to do with the question. "Abilities exist independent of their sources" means that once an ability is on the stack, you can't get rid of it by destroying it's source - it will still attempt to resolve. That has little to do with what's happening here, as there are no abilities involved other than the initial bouncing one.

You still don't get to cast the card bounced by Reflector Mage, the reason for which being that it's ability creates a restriction with a duration for all cards with that name. This restriction isn't tied to Reflector Mage in any way (as it could be, if it stated "or until Reflector Mage leaves the battlefield"), and it's also not an ability (which it could also be, if it stated "At the beginning of your next upkeep, that player can cast spells with that name again" - which for multiple reasons would be horrible).
