Scion of the Ur-Dragon ability question

Asked by borja 5 years ago

Hello everyone. First I apologise if this has been asked before. However, I performed a search in different platforms and found nothing, maybe because it has an obvious response. So let's go:

How exactly does the Scion of the Ur-Dragon 's ability work? In my mind, when you pay the cost it enters the stack, then resolves at once. Or do your opponents get to see what dragon you coose before the transformation.

For example, I activate the ability and turn Scion into Dragonlord Dromoka during my turn. Do my opponents get to respond after they see my choice or do they have to answer only to the ability's activation (paying 2 mana), before knowing what the Scion will become?

Thank you for any responses and again I'm sorry if this seems something obvious (or has been answered), but since MTG isn't always what it seems, I wanted to make sure.

No, they only see it once it resolves. They don't know what it becomes until it is already that creature. There is no response time.

No, when you pay the mana and activate the ability, it goes on the stack. Your opponents can respond to that, prior to the ability resolving. However, since you choose the dragon during the resoltion of the ability, they can only respond without knowing which dragon you will select.

Compare it to something like Reanimate . Since you choose targets for spells while you cast them, once you play the spell, your opponents will have knowledge of what you want to return and can respond knowledgeably.

Finally, for any future rules questions, there is a link in the header bar for a "Rules Q&A" section, which handles such asks.

So in the end it was how I imagined. Thank you for the responses guys!

Also, sorry about that, Boza. Did not realize that section was specifically for these questions. Will post in there in the future. Thanks for the heads up.

Boza I was referring to no response time once the card was searched for and chosen. Also, yes this should be in the Rules Q&A section.

Also, for the double-bait, you can activate the ability and choose not to find a dragon for the ability. Since they won't know whether you will cast something scary, they have to respond prior to that.

Or if they respond with say Murder on the scion, you can respond too by activating the ability again, finding something with hexproof like Silumgar, the Drifting Death , effectively countering their spell, and then finding the actual dragon you wanted to transform into via the first activation.

For the protected dragons, use Silumgar, the Drifting Death or Belltoll Dragon for true hexproof, or Dragonlord Ojutai , Chromium, the Mutable , or Palladia-Mors, the Ruiner for semi-hexproof.

Consider at least 1 of these options for each Scion list.

Even though this question has been resolved, I moved it over to the Rules Q&A section Boza previously mentioned. Due to the way card pages on this site link to any rules questions about that card, placing this in the proper location will be helpful to any future users who might have similar questions.

borja, if you could please hit the "Mark as Answer" button to indicate the correct response, that would be appreciated.

As this question has been resolved for a couple days, I have gone ahead and chosen an accepted answer. In the future, please remember to hit the "Mark as Answer" button on a responsive post once you have no further follow-up questions.
