Card interaction - Back to Basics + Celestial Dawn

Back to Basics + Celestial Dawn

If I had Back to Basics in play and I had some nonbasic lands in play, then I cast Celestial Dawn would those lands now untap?

Thank you!

Short answer, no they won't untap.

Long answer: Your lands won't untap because despite Celestial Dawn turning all your lands into Plains, it does not make them basic lands. What you would have is a nonbasic Plains with no other abilities. A similar effect happens when you have a Blood Moon in play.

Actually, Celestial Dawn does turn all nonbasic lands on the battlefield into Plains, replacing completely whatever else is on that card (except the Snow supertype, should it have one), as it doesn't state "in addition to" - just like Blood Moon. Both will turn nonbasic lands into the respective basic land, and since Mountains and Plains are basic lands, Back to Basics won't keep them from untapping anymore.

Wait, forgot about 305.8, stating that every land without the basic supertype is nonbasic... thought it was the other way round. Disregard my answer :)

@BlueScope: That's incorrect. The effect only causes them to become one subtype. It does not overwrite types or supertypes. Basic is a supertype, and not all lands with basic land types are basic lands (see Steam Vents, for example).

Any lands that were basic lands before Celestial Dawn will still be basic lands after Celestial Dawn. Same for nonbasic lands. Celestial Dawn does not affect which lands untap due to Back to Basics.
