Can you exchange life totals in response to your health going below zero?

If you life total is brought to zero or below zero, are you able to respond to the change in life total using an effect like Magus of the Mirror ?

No. Players who have 0 or less life lose the game as a state-based action. SBAs occur before you even receive priority to activate abilities let alone before those abilities resolve.

You can use something to let you survive at zero life (such as Lich or Phyrexian Unlife ) to avoid losing and switch life totals then.

The game used to allow this so people would use Channel + Drain Life as a finisher.

@nobu_the_bard: You're probably thinking of the old Prosperous Bloom decks. Prosperity , Cadaverous Bloom , Squandered Resources , Natural Balance , Infernal Contract , etc.
