Can you counter clone if it is a copy of Carnage Tyrant?

Asked by The_Brown_Cathulu 3 years ago

Clone are a copy of anything on the battlefield. So it is not a etb trigger it is a copy when it enters. Meaning if it's a copy of Carnage Tyrant. Will my clone have protection against counter spells?

Clone is put onto the stack as itself. It's replacement ability allows it to enter the battlefield as something else, like Carnage Tyrant. However, the decision on what to copy is made when it resolves. You can counter Clone normally, regardless of what it intends to be a copy of. You can also kill what it's going to copy, but then it can still enter as a copy of something else. The player casting Clone also doesn't need to announce what they're copying until it's resolved.
