Can Redirect redirect Spell Burst even if x isn't 2.

Asked by Pheardemons 7 years ago

My opponent plays a Psychosis Crawler and I want to counter with Spell Burst . I pay 9 mana (one to cast, 5 for crawler, and 3 for buyback) and my opponent to plays Redirect on Spell Burst to redirect the counter to the spell Redirect. Is Redirect a legal target for Spell Burst when x is 5.

8/15/2010 You may change any number of the targets, including all of them or none of them. If, for one of the targets, you cant choose a new legal target, then it remains unchanged (even if the current target is illegal).

Because Spell Burst has to target a spell with CMC 5, you can't change its target to Redirect because Redirect isn't a legal target.

You could, however, use Misdirection instead, as that would be a legal target because it's CMC is also 5.

The easy answer is that a spell cannot target itself.

Rule:- 113.4. A spell or ability on the stack is an illegal target for itself.

Spell Burst would have to be redirected onto a different spell or onto Redirect itself.

I should say that Redirect is probably not even a legal target because of cost on Burst.

If X=1, so the CMC of Spell Burst was 2, then Redirect would be a legal target for also having a CMC of 2. Otherwise, Redirect isn't a legal target.
