Can I use Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip as a commander?

I'm wondering about the exile stuff and what happens if he dies as a planeswalker. Does he turn back into his untransformed state?

You can use him as your commander.

I think the confusion here is with the command zone. Whenever your commander goes to a zone other than the battlefield, you can choose whether or not to send it to the command zone. If you do, it goes there instead. If you don't, it goes to the zone as normal. If he's flipped and dies as a walker, you can still send him to the command zone because commander is a property of the card itself. He will revert back to his default state and when you cast him again, he'll enter as a creature again.

The other issue with Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip is that unlike other flip or transform cards, he has to exile himself first.

Planeswalkers have to enter the battlefield to get their loyalty counters, so if Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip simply flips while still on the battlefield, as Jace, Telepath Unbound  Flip, he will die with 0 loyalty counters. Cards like Moonmist just straight up kills him.

So, when Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip exiles himself per his ability, technically you can send him straight to the command zone instead of making him re-enter as a PW.

But yes, acbooster is right, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using him as your Commander. If he dies as a Planeswalker, he would go to the graveyard as Creature Jace  Flip not Planeswalker Jace  Flip because all flip cards are the original side of the card in the hand, library, graveyard, or exile. They can only be their flip sides on the battlefield. So, when he goes to the graveyard, you can send him to your Command Zone the same as any other Commander.
