Can I use an alternative casting cost to turn a manifested creature face-up?

Asked by HughBalzac 9 years ago

Say for instance I have a Demon of Death's Gate face down manifest from a Cloudform or something. Could I turn it face up using it's sac 3 creatures and pay 6 life effect?

No, Manifest states that you have to pay a creatures CMC to turn it face-up.

I believe the only thing written on a card that allows you to turn manifested cards face-up and doesn't explicitly say so is Morph, in which case you may pay the Morph cost instead of the CMC.

Yes you may. Here is the rule:

112.6c An objects ability that allows a player to pay an alternative cost rather than its mana cost functions in any zone in which its mana cost can be paid (which, in general, means it functions on the stack). An objects ability that otherwise modifies what that particular object costs to castfunctions on the stack.

@ShamaLamaDingDong: That's incorrect. That rule states, "An object's ability that allows a player to pay an alternative cost rather than its mana cost functions in any zone in which its mana cost can be paid . . ."

That's not what's happening here. Manifest doesn't allow an alternate cost to be paid; it explicitly states that you may turn the card face up for its mana cost if it's a creature card. You aren't casting the card, and you aren't given permission to pay alternate costs.

Yes you can, and the rule quoted by ShamaLamaDingDong is the reason for it. While Demon of Death's Gate is manifested its mana cost can be paid from the battlefield. Therefore, its ability allowing you to pay life and sacrifice creatures instead of paying its mana cost works at this time.
