Can I use a creatures tap ability at the beginning of my turn before the untap phase?

Asked by kellerke83 7 years ago

If I play a Thermo-Alchemist on what we will call turn A then passed the turn to my opponent who is taking what we will call turn B then at the beginning of my next turn that we will will refer to as turn C before my untap phase can I tap my Thermo Alchemist to deal damage to my opponent and then untap it during the untap phase. The rules state that you cannot use a tap ability of a creature unless you have controlled that creature since the beginning of your current turn. Any help would be appreciated

No.

The first thing you do on your turn is untap, with no players receiving priority before that happens.

Also note that even if you could activate abilities before untap, the Thermo Alchemist would still be affected by summoning sickness until your upkeep anyway.

Rule 302.6. A creatures activated ability with the tap symbol or the untap symbol in its activation cost cant be activated unless the creature has been under its controllers control continuously since his or her most recent turn began. A creature cant attack unless it has been under its controllers control continuously since his or her most recent turn began. This rule is informally called the summoning sickness rule.

So summoning sickness wouldn't apply because i had control since the start of TURN C. I think you're first response seemed to answer my question though. So even though the summoning sickness wouldn't apply and the ability activates as an instant there is no formal period with which i could activate that ability or play any other spell before untapping begins?

The first time a player gets priority during a turn is the upkeep step. The Untap step is special in that no player gets priority. What happens during the Untap step s you simultaneously Phase in all phased out permanents you control and phase out all phased in permanents you control with phasing (this rarely comes up these days). Then you determine what permanents you control that will untap (this is usually all of them, but could be fewer), then you simultaneously untap all those permanents. Abilities can trigger during your untap step (often triggers such as "when [this permanent] untaps"), but cannot be put onto the stack until upkeep.
