can I redirect a duress?

Asked by saj0219 9 years ago

so my question doesn't have to be about the spells specifically mentioned, but... If a player casts something like Duress which says "target opponent", can its target be changed by something like a Misdirection cast by the second player to retarget the initial caster of Duress? My guess is no because Duress specifically states it needs to target an opponent, and if you cast a retargeting spell like Misdirection you still need to target a legal target....

You can always target Duress with Misdirection. As Misdirection resolves, if you are the only opponent of the player who cast the Duress], the target will remain unchanged and you will still get Duressed. The Misdirection will have done nothing. In a multiplayer game, where the player who cast Duress has multiple opponents, you could misdirect it to a different one of that player's opponents.

Thanks Drilnoth! That's what I suspected (that the Misdirection would have no effect).
