Can I kill Nekusar, the Mindrazer in response to it's second ability.

Asked by Waroulolz 9 years ago

If my opponent draws a card, 2nd ability triggers and goes on the stack. If I kill Nekusar, the Mindrazer before the ability resolves, does it deals damage as it says 'Nekusar DEALS', but if he's dead, he can't deal damage ?

I mean, is it different from an ability like : 'opponent looses 2 hp' (that would work) or does it resolves the same way ?

Once an ability is on the stack, it exists independent of its source. Even though Nekusar is no longer there, the damage will still be dealt.

Once an ability is on the stack it exists independently of the source and will continue to resolve unless countered. If something is referenced by a spell or ability and is no longer in the expected zone the last known information is used.

Also life loss and damage are 2 different things even though damage usually causes life loss. So "Whenever an opponent draws a card they lose 1 life" would be a completely different ability. If Nekusar, the Mindrazer had infect for instance the damage would cause the player to receive poison counters instead of losing life. Or if a player had protection from red via Seht's Tiger they could not be dealt damage from Nekusar.
