Can I gain infinite life from Molder + infinite mana?

If I have Molder in my hand and I have (for the sake of the question) 500,000 colorless mana floating in my mana pool, when I cast the Molder, even if there is no legal target on the field for the first part of the effect, can I still gain life equal to X? Or would I have to destroy an artifact or enchantment with CMC X to be able to also gain X life?

If you are playing with un-cards however, Gleemax is a perfectly good target.

No, sadly, our playgroup doesn't allow Un-cards to be used. Ah well. Time to research more mono-green lifegain cards. :P

In all zones except the stack, the value of X in a card's mana cost is 0. On the stack, if has whatever value was declared for it.

No. You can't cast a spell or activate an ability if you can't declare enough legal targets for it.
Additionally, Molder's target must have CMC exactly equal to X, so you can't declare X=500,000.
