Can I enchant Frost Walker with Cloudform?

Asked by mkiyechad 9 years ago

Say I have a Frost Walker on the top of my library and I used Cloudform to manifest it onto the field. Cloudform is now attached to it as a face-down 2/2 creature, and then on my next turn I pay Frost Walker's 1U to flip it.

I have read that Cloudform will stay attached to the creature it enchanted, effectively making Frost Walker a 4/1 with flying and hexproof. Now, when Frost Walker is flipped up, is it's ability triggered because of Cloudform?

I would side that it does not trigger, because (1) Cloudform did not "target" Frost Walker in the first place, since it was attached when it was a face-down creature, (2) the text of Cloudform does not contain specifically the word "target", and (3) Cloudform is played uniquely then other Auras because it comes in as an Enchantment first. MTG realized that you can't play an Enchantment Aura without having a creature to attach it to (a target), so to circumvent this they made it an Enchantment that then becomes an Aura when attached to the manifested creature.

And if that's the case, now that Frost Walker has hexproof, it can no longer be the target of any spells or abilities an opponent controls.

Is this a correct assessment? If yes, then Manifest just got a whole lot more awesome :)

Your line of reasoning is sound.

Yes, you're right for one simple thing. When you attached the Cloudform, you attached to a Manifest creature, which is a 2/2 colorless creature with nothing else. When you flip Frost Walker up, the enchantment is already attached and it does not target it again, and since Frost Walker asks for becoming the target (as Illusions does), and Cloudform didn't target it since he's flipping up (and this does not re-attach any artifact or enchantment), it'll stay enchanted and will have hexproof.

As a bonus, the good part of this you can even avoid things like Sudden Shock, since when it resolves, it will have hexproof (this is almost cheating :] )

Cloudform doesn't target any any point. It's not that it targeted the manifest, it simply became attached to it.
