Can i Disdainful stroke Dig Through Time with a Delve of 6

Asked by Sagi007 9 years ago

Disdainful Stroke counters cost 4+ but Dig Through Time now costs 2 now.

but when i look at the card itself i still see a 8manacard.

Yes you may. Exiling cards with Delve does not reduce the cost; instead it pays for colorless mana in the cost.

Even if it did reduce the cost, it would still work because Disdainful Stroke checks converted mana cost, which is always the sum total of mana in the top-right corner of a card.

Yes you can still counter the Dig Through Time even if they have used the delve ability to pay for the cost. The spell itself still costs 8 mana to cast, but they are exiling cards to help cast it.

Greatsword made the key distinction: Disdainful Stroke cares about the -converted mana cost- of the spell, which never changes. No amount of alternate costs, additional costs, or cost reducers/increasers ever change the converted mana cost of the spell, just the mana cost.

Awkwardly, I get flagged either way. Often times I show up to people's decks and implore them to not play that card.

Well, that's a solid public service you're providing even if it's irritating to you. I should make an account named Hankyu for the same reason.

@Devonin What you said about the CMC or a card never chaining isn't exactly correct. Spells with an X in the mana cost or split cards have different CMCs when they are on the stack. However you are correct in saying that additional costs and cost modifying abilities don't effect the CMC of a card.
