Can I cast Mairsil, the Pretender with a caged Havengul Lich?

Asked by ulysses2009 5 years ago

If I activate the ability of a caged Havengul Lich to cast target creature from a graveyard, can I sacrifice Mairsil, the Pretender in response (for example with Ashnod's Altar ) to recast himself from the graveyard?

No, you declare the targets of spells and abilities when you put them on the stack and Mairsil, the Pretender is on the battlefield when you activate the ability to cast target creature spell from a graveyard. Even if you use something with a mana ability, like Ashnod's Altar , to sacrifice it during the activation of the ability, targets are declared before you get a chance to activate mana abilities during the activation.

Thinking further: Activating a caged Grenzo, Dungeon Warden and respond with Tel-Jilad Stylus would work then?

Or activating Grenzo, Dungeon Warden and respond by first activating Stormchaser Chimera and then tapping Mairsil for Sensei's Divining Top ?

Yes, those work. Though only once per turn cycle without a haste enabler because summoning sickness.
