Can I cast Battlefield Thaumaturge followed by Curse of the Swine before Doom Blade?

Asked by Renaud 9 years ago

I have Battlefield Thaumaturge and Curse of the Swine in my hand, my opponent has Doom Blade (and a bunch of creature on the field)

Is there a way my opponent could destroy my mage before I get to cast Curse of the Swine ?

The way I understand it:

1- I cast Battlefield Thaumaturge

2- I pass priority

3- He passes it back

4- Battlefield Thaumaturge resolves

Now I have priority so he can't cast Doom Blade yet (right?)

5- I cast Curse of the Swine

6- I pass priority

7- He can use Doom Blade now.. but it's doesn't really bother me since Curse of the Swine was already cast

You are correct. Your opponent can't do anything to stop you during the casting process; he or she can only cast Doom Blade after the process is complete. However, destroying Battlefield Thaumaturge at this point will not do anything about the cost reduction because it was already applied to Curse of the Swine .

Here is how he could kill it. Battlefield Thaumaturge is cast, Priority is passedplayer 2 passes priorityyou tap land for mana player 2 responds to land being tapped for mana.player 2 casts Doom Blade targeting Battlefield Thaumaturge In Tournament play it all depends on how you word your response and timing.

@Oob: That's incorrect. Mana abilities don't use the stack, and players cannot respond to them.

@Epochalyptik: Doesnt have to go on any stack. Im not talking about Magic Online where everything has priority rules cause it needs to have that, in Sanctioned table top Magic the Gathering sanctioned tournaments if I see him tapping his lands for mana and say in response to you tapping your lands for mana I cast this instant. 10/10 times even if a judge is called in, my play is correct. While mana abilities dont start a stack im casting an instant before hes done or in the case im presenting starting to cast. If you wana talk about Magic Online your argument totally wins. im just saying.

Oob - Magic Online IS real Magic. What you're doing is against the rules and at Competitive REL you WILL get warned. The non-active player can't do anything while the Stack is empty, they have to wait for the active player to put something on the stack, which Mana Abilities don't use.

@Oob: Ten times out of ten, you are incorrect. You cannot respond to a player activating a mana ability. Mana abilities don't use the stack, and you can't respond to them. You need to have priority to do something, and the activation of a mana ability doesn't cause priority to pass from the player activating the ability to you.

Regarding tapping lands for mana:

605.3. Activating an activated mana ability follows the rules for activating any other activated ability (see rule 602.2), with the following exceptions: #605.3a A player may activate an activated mana ability whenever he or she has priority, whenever he or she is casting a spell or activating an ability that requires a mana payment, or whenever a rule or effect asks for a mana payment, even if its in the middle of casting or resolving a spell or activating or resolving an ability. #605.3b An activated mana ability doesnt go on the stack, so it cant be targeted, countered, or otherwise responded to. Rather, it resolves immediately after it is activated. (See rule 405.6c.)
