Can Goblin Dark-Dwellers cast sorceries at instant speed?

Asked by CkajLanoa 6 years ago

Let's say a Flickerwisp's ability exiles my Goblin Dark-Dwellers. They enter the battlefield at the beginning of the endstep, as per usual. When they enter the battlefield, can I use their ability to cast a three mana or less sorcery in my graveyard?

The rulings for this card have the following entry:

You cast the card during the resolution of the enters-the-battlefield ability, not later in the turn. If it’s a sorcery card, ignore the timing restrictions based on it being a sorcery card. Other timing restrictions, such as “Cast [this card] only during combat,” must be followed.

So yes, Goblin Dark-Dwellers allows you to pay a sorcery at instant speed.

Interestingly, you always do this. Sorcery speed requires the stack to be empty, but when casting a spell using Goblin Dark-Dwellers the stack isn't empty, because the ability letting you cast the spell is still on it resolving. An implication of this is that, if your opponent has a Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir on the battlefield, you won't be able to cast any spell off of Goblin Dark-Dwellers because Teferi enforces the stack empty requirement on all spells you cast.
