Can Faith's Shield Target a Land?

Asked by Coolminko 8 years ago

Okay, so the fateful hour mechanic of this cards give both the player and all permanents he/she controls protection from their color of choice. My question is, can the initial target permanent be a land? Say I have 5 or less life and I want protection for myself, but I have no creatures to target with Faith's Shield, can I target a forest and still gain protection from my color of choice? It seems like a fair play, but I'd like to be sure.

The way you are phrasing your query tells me that you think protection keeps you as a player safe from damage. Protection has a handy acronym D.E.B.T.. Protection means that the permanent that has protection from (a predetermined or chosen quality, such as) the color Green cannot be:

Damaged by sources with the given quality (all such damage is prevented)
Enchanted or equipped by permanents with the given quality
Blocked by creatures with the given quality (if it's a creature)
Targeted by spells of the given quality, or abilities with sources of the given quality.

So knowing this, if you have no creatures or way to blockwith on board, and they are attacking you with creatures having power enough to cause lethal damage protection on a land would do nothing to protect you, however, let's say someone is casting Aftershock targeting your Plains, then granting the land protection from red would prevent it from being targeted by red spells/effects until the end of turn.

Hope this helps.

Yes it can. A land is a permanent when it's on the battlefield.

Note that even if you have 5 or less life, the target must still be made. Then you'll still get the fateful hour replacement effect.

@DJSeras: The question clearly indicates that OP is using the fateful hour portion of Faith's Shield to gain protection (as a player). Protection functions the same for players as for permanents; a player with protection from a characteristic can't be dealt damage by a source with that characteristic.

Oh, sorry, I should probably not try to write an extended answer while at work.
