Can Daxos of Meletis cast an opponent's Commander?

Asked by TheAmazingSalsa 9 years ago

So yesterday I was playing commander. I was running a Daxos of Meletis deck, and playing against a Krenko, Mob Boss.

Long Story short, I countered Krenkko with Hinder and placed it on top of the library, attacked with Daxos on my turn and stole his commander, but we weren't quite sure if it was possible or not.

Because the card is exiled, your opponent will have the option of returning it to the command zone. However, you can cast it per the ability's effect.

I was told that if the Commander leaves the battlefield at all with the exception of temporary exile effects (when it's controller get the choice), it is returned to the command zone.

That is almost completely incorrect.

The command zone replacement effect is an optional effect that may be applied if a commander would go to exile or to your graveyard. It does not apply to any other zone changes, and it doesn't have any way of distinguishing what "temporary exile" is.

Good to know. So you really could shuffle their Commander back into their library or something? If it's not cast from the Command zone does the price still go up?

Separate questions should be asked in new threads. However,

You can put a commander card into a library. This is commonly called "tucking." The command zone replacement effect doesn't apply to this action. You can also return a commander to its owner's hand.

The "commander tax" only applies for each time you cast a commander from the command zone. You neither increment nor pay the additional cost when you cast a commander from another zone.
