Can a token benefit from persist or undying?

The question is pretty straightforward, what happens to a token with persist or undying that dies without a counter on it? This is mainly concerning the infinite combo between Cauldron of Souls + Mikaeus, the Unhallowed

Still works to keep all my zombie generals from dying though. Not a big loss. Mainly wanted to use it with Undead Alchemist to attack mercilessly

It may be worth noting, that because Regenerate replaces dying, it will work on Tokens because it prevents them from ever leaving the battlefield in the first place.

When a token leaves the battlefield it immediately ceases to exist. Persist or Undying will trigger, but when they go to resolve and return the card that died, there won't be one in the graveyard to return.
