Can a tapped creature "fight?"

Asked by FierceTierce 8 years ago

Can I cast a card like Unnatural Aggression targeting one or two creatures that are tapped?

Seems like an obvious yes to me, but I want to make sure I'm not mistaken.

Yes.

Fighting, as explained in the reminder text on Epic Confrontation, for example, doesn't require the creatures to be tapped. They just deal damage to each other.

Yes. Fighting is, by definition, two creatures each dealing damage equal to their power to each other. This means deathtouch will work, as any damage dealt with it is lethal. However, first/double strike will not work, because fighting is not part of the combat step where first/double strike come into account. Since they are merely damaging each other, it does not matter if either one or both of the creatures are tapped.

Note: Arena is a prime example of an answer to your question, as the fighting creatures will be tapped. This shows that being tapped does nothing in the way of two or more creatures fighting each other.

Also note: Arena's ability taps a creature, but the tap is part of the effect, not the cost, so the targeted creature can already be tapped, it'll just be "tapped again".
