Caltrops and Sydri, Galvanic Genius

Asked by chosenone124 6 years ago

Suppose I have a Caltrops and Sydri, Galvanic Genius. My opponent attacks with a bunch of creatures. In response to the Caltrops triggers, I animate Caltrops and grant it Deathtouch and Lifelink.

After the Deathtouch/Lifelink ability resolves, my opponent destroys Caltrops with Lightning Bolt.

Does the damage from Caltrops still instantly destroy creatures and gain me life?

Yes, but your opponent would have to intentionally allow the deathtouch/lifelink ability to resolve when they could just bolt it before it resolves.

Caltrops ability where it does 1 damage won't kill things because deathtouch has to be combat damage.

DRACULA150704 Deathtouch is any damage, not just combat damage.

SteelSentry read the rules- I quote

"702.2a. Deathtouch is a static ability. 702.2b. Any nonzero amount of combat damage assigned to a creature by a source with deathtouch is considered to be lethal damage, regardless of that creature's toughness."

It says combat damage or else if you gave Pestilence Demon deathtouch it could board wipe for 1 mana

DRACULA150704 read the rules- I quote

"702.2b A creature with toughness greater than 0 thats been dealt damage by a source with deathtouch since the last time state-based actions were checked is destroyed as a state-based action."

You can do exactly that thing with Pestilence Demon.

That's 702.2a. and 702.2c. You left out the actual 702.2b, "702.2b A creature with toughness greater than 0 thats been dealt damage by a source with deathtouch since the last time state-based actions were checked is destroyed as a state-based action. See rule 704."

702.2c covers combat damage with deathtouch, but according to 702.2b it is any damage. The point of 702.2c is for it's interaction with trample

In conclusion. An animated caltrops with deathtouch and lifelink will trigger to all attacking creature. You gain 1 life for each attacking creature and they are destroyed.

Yes but the question was in regard to said Caltrops being hit by Lightning Bolt before tue trigger resolves, not whether deathtouch would kill or not.

If I wasn't clear, the Lightning Bolt is before the Caltrops damage triggers resolves but after the lifelink/deathtouch ability resolves

yeah, if that's the case then it would still kill them, but your opponent would have to intentionally let the deathtouch resolve before they cast the Bolt, they could just cast it before deathtouch resolves to kill it before it gains deathtouch, and I don't see why they wouldn't do that.

You could also respond to the bolt by activating the lifelink/deathtouch ability again, provided you have enough mana. When Caltrops ability resolves it uses last known information to check whether Caltrops had deathtouch as it last existed on the battlefield, if some instance of the deathtouch ability has managed to resolve targeting it, your opponent will lose all their attackers.
