Burrenton Forge-Tender with Bonfire of the Damned

Asked by Bovine073 6 years ago

Playing Ponza against a Naya Creature deck. They have a Burrenton Forge-Tender on the battlefield. I draw a Bonfire of the Damned (with 7 mana open), reveal it, let the miracle trigger, while the miracle trigger is on the stack, Beast Within their forge tender.

The question is, can they sac their forge-tender at this point to cause bonfire's damage to be prevented? In short, is a card that has been revealed as a miracle this way a source?

Before the miracle trigger resolves, Bonfire of the Damned is still in your hand. When it moves to the stack as you cast it, it'll become a new object (cards become new objects when they change zones).

If you kill Burrenton Forge-Tender before you resolve the miracle ability, your opponent won't be able to choose Bonfire as a spell on the stack and therefore won't be able to prevent its damage as a source.

For reference, here's the rule about choosing a source.

609.7a If an effect requires a player to choose a source of damage, he or she may choose a permanent; a spell on the stack (including a permanent spell); any object referred to by an object on the stack, by a replacement or prevention effect thats waiting to apply, or by a delayed triggered ability thats waiting to trigger (even if that object is no longer in the zone it used to be in); or a face-up object in the command zone. A source doesnt need to be capable of dealing damage to be a legal choice. The source is chosen when the effect is created. If the player chooses a permanent, the effect will apply to the next damage dealt by that permanent, regardless of whether its combat damage or damage dealt as the result of a spell or ability. If the player chooses a permanent spell, the effect will apply to any damage dealt by that spell and any damage dealt by the permanent that spell becomes when it resolves.

They will be able to choose Bonfire of the Damned with the ability, as it is "any object referred to by an object on the stack" (it gets referred to by the miracle ability still on the stack), but as said, it will become a new object when it gets cast, so the damage won't be prevented.
