Brion Stoutarm, Spark Trooper, and Gift of Immortality interaction

Asked by zretrareo27 7 years ago

Using Brion Stoutarm's ability on Spark Trooper, if Spark Trooper is equipped with Gift of Immortality, does it come back to the battlefield at the end of my turn, then the end of my opponents turn, and repeat?

First a technicality: Auras enchant creatures, they do not equip.

Then, what's happening if Spark Trooper dies (regardless of how, which is including it's own sacrifice requirement) is that it will be returned to the battlefield right away, under your control (assuming you're the owner).

Gift of Immortality will be returned to the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step, meaning if the Trooper dies from it's own sacrifice requirement, you won't get Gift back until the next turn's end step (meaning if your Trooper dies again until then, Gift won't return to the battlefield).

It works as long as you activate Brion Stoutarms ability (on your turn if he's untapped) and order the triggers correctly.

At the beginning of an end step

  1. Spark Trooper trigger
  2. Gift of Immortality trigger

Stack resolves first in, last out (assuming priority is passed accordingly of course)After the Gift of Immortality trigger resolves, you can use Brion Stoutarm's ability if he's available before the Spark Trooper trigger begins to resolve.

The result will be your Spark Trooper will come back and as "beginning of..." triggers don't retroactively trigger, you won't have to sac him to his own ability. Gift of Immortality will have a delayed triggered ability that will wait to resolve at the beginning of the next end step (the one you want to order correctly so you get your Spark Trooper back).

So, a play would go something like this.

Declare attackers - attack with Spark Trooper (lets say he goes unblocked). Combat phase ends. Use Brion's sac ability on him, it deals it damage, etc. Now it "dies", but is returned to the battlefield under my control due to Gift. Then, my opponents turn - since I won't be using Brion's sac ability, does my Spark Trooper continually come back into play through that turn because of Gift? And since it has haste, and it did leave and come back, is it untapped now through their turn even though I attacked with it? And finally, does it make it back to my upkeep and combat phase from Gift, so I could theoretically repeat the process?

Thanks in advance.

When you activate Brion Stoutarm's ability, Spark Trooper dies, causing Gift of Immortality's ability to trigger. Gift of Immortality's ability will onto the stack above Brion Stoutarm's ability.

When Gift of Immortality's ability resolves, you return Spark Trooper to the battlefield and you also create a delayed triggered ability (DTA) that triggers at the beginning of the next end step. This DTA is what returns Gift of Immortality itself to the battlefield.

Then, Brion Stoutarm's ability resolves and deals damage.

Let's skip to the end step now. There are two abilities that trigger at this point: Spark Trooper's ability and Gift of Immortality's DTA. You'll want to put Spark Trooper's ability onto the stack first, then put the DTA on top of it. This way, the DTA will resolve, returning Gift of Immortality to the battlefield enchanting Spark Trooper. When Spark Trooper's ability resolves, you'll sacrifice Spark Trooper. This will trigger Gift of Immortality's ability, which will repeat the earlier sequence of returning Spark Trooper and creating a DTA.

Because you're currently in an end step, the DTA will trigger during the next end step. Therefore, you can continue to stack the triggers such that during each end step, you'll return Gift of Immortality to the battlefield, then sacrifice and return Spark Trooper.

From this point on, you should hope that Spark Trooper doesn't die before Gift of Immortality's DTA resolves. If that happens, Spark Trooper stays dead because Gift of Immortality isn't on the battlefield yet and won't be able to return Spark Trooper.
