Brightflame reduced by Battlefield Thaumaturge ?

Asked by ALX 9 years ago

If I have a Battlefield Thaumaturge on the field and I cast Brightflame on my opponent's blue creature and he has several other blue creatures on the field will the X cost be reduced for each creature affected by the spell or are they not targeted? Or, can this combo ever reduce Brightflame's cost by more than just 1colorless mana?

From Gatherer:

10/1/2005 Only one creature is targeted. If that creature leaves the battlefield or otherwise becomes an illegal target, the entire spell is countered. No other creatures are affected.

Brightflame and Battlefield Thaumathurge is not a combo, sadly.

It's possible for a spell or ability to affect something without targeting it. As-written, Brightflame only targets one creature, and also happens to affect other creatures that share a color with it. This is important to note, because that means if the one targeted creature is somehow made an illegal target for Brightflame then the spell will be countered by the rules and have no effect at all. Because Brightflame only has one target, Battlefield Thaumaturge will only reduce its cost by 1.
