Bounce Lands Outside Commander's Color Identity?

Asked by tacallaway 6 years ago

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm pretty new to Magic as a whole and I couldn't find the answer to this. According to the EDH rules, a deck can't have any lands that include a basic land type outside of a commander's color identity. However, does that mean I could play something like Simic Growth Chamber in a Ezuri, Renegade Leader deck?

I ask because I wanted to run bounce lands, but Jungle Basin has way more drawbacks, and I'm not running anything that would specifically need colorless mana.

No. Color identity includes a card's mana cost, rules text, and any characteristic-defining abilities. Simic Growth Chamber has a color identity of green-blue and isn't legal for inclusion in any monocolored decks.

You can run cards like Misty Rainforest, but that's only because it doesn't include the mana symbols anywhere, and doesn't have the basic land types. It refers to the land types in its text, but that doesn't affect its Color Identity. Bounce lands, however, have the mana symbols in their text box, and thus have the appropriate Color Identity.
