Boros Reckoner and copied damage spell

Asked by mikeqc 8 years ago

If I have Boros Reckoner on the board, cast a Lightning Bolt on it, and then cast a Increasing Vengeance to copy the Lightning Bolt and target the Boros Reckoner a second time, will the Boros Reckoner deal 3 damage to 2 different targets, or 6 deal damage to a single target?

Neither will happen.

When the copy of Lightning Bolt resolves, 3 damage is dealt and Boros Reckoner's ability triggers. Then SBA's are checked, and see the Reckoner with lethal damage marked on it and the Reckoner dies.

The Reckoner's ability will resolve, letting you deal 3 damage to something.

Then the original Lightning Bolt will try to resolve but fizzle because its target is no longer on the battlefield.

Though if you do something like Boros Charm that gives a creature indestructible, you can hammer at the Reckoner all day and it'll never die (well, until EOT anyways lol).

For best results, Stuffy Doll is the best creature with that ability.

Note that if you have an ability that buffs Boros Reckoner a bit, perhaps Dictate of Heliod, then it would work as you think: you would have 2 instances of his ability, each allowing you to deal 3 damage to something. They can be the same target or different ones.
