Boonweaver Giant combo without a sacrifice outlet

Asked by snowmaster55555atgmaildotcom 6 years ago

So I'm playing a Marath, Will of the Wild combo deck.

1.) I cast Boonweaver Giant with a Goblin Bombardment and a Warstorm Surge on the battlefield.

2.) My opponent destroys the Goblin Bombardment in response with a Slice in Twain.

3.) Boonweaver Giant resolves.

4.) I stack the enter the battlefield triggers so that I get a Pattern of Rebirth on the giant before it zaps itself to death.

5.) I tutor up Karmic Guide with the Pattern of Rebirth, reanimating the Boonweaver Giant.

6.) Repeat step 4.

Question: Do I need to select the target of what Warstorm Surge hits before resolution?

If yes, then I am not able to tutor up a Fiend Hunter to win on the spot.

If no, then I tutor up Fiend Hunter. Then, if I stacked it correctly, with Karmic Guide's Warstorm Surge trigger, combined with Fiend Hunter's, I could exile the Karmic Guide, then shoot the Fiend Hunter, bringing back Karmic Guide and Boonweaver Giant to ultimately tutor up Reveillark to keep going.

If the answer is yes, how (if it even is possible) do I complete the combo to kill my opponent?

114.1. Some spells and abilities require their controller to choose one or more targets for them. The targets are object(s), player(s), and/or zone(s) the spell or ability will affect. These targets are declared as part of the process of putting the spell or ability on the stack. The targets cant be changed except by another spell or ability that explicitly says it can do so. I hope this was helpful.

Yup, just checking to make sure it wasn't as easy as I thought. Thanks.

You have to select the target of an ability when you put it on the stack, this is before it resolves.

I can't think of a good line to combo off without a sacrifice outlet. Maybe just start using Greater Gargadon as a sacrifice outlet and suspend him right before you plan on comboing off.

You should still be able to combo off using the same cards but with one added search from Boonweaver Giant. If you shoot Karmic Guide to itself then you can use the new Boonweaver to get Reveillark. That in turn shoots itself to trigger LTB effect and get back Karmic Guide, this time shoot opponent for 2 damage. Get back Boonweaver. shoot itself, get Saffi Eriksdotter Use saffi to shoot karmic guide, in response before damage is dealt sac Saffi targeting Karmic Guide. Karmic dies to saffi damage and Rarmic returns to delayed Saffi trigger. target Karmic Guide for damage to itself and target Reveillark with Karmic ETB trigger. Let karmic die first, this is important. Reveillark enter shoots itself. LTB target Karmic Guide and Saffi. Use Karmic Guide to target opponent and Saffi to target Karmic Guide for damage. In response sac Saffi targeting Karmic Guide. Start loop from Karmic returns to delayed Saffi trigger.

This will cause a loop that deals 2 damage to any target every time the loop resolves. Hope this helps albeit very late. I found this Q&A while asking my own question. I'm also a very proficient combo player of the Karmic / Reveillark lines.
