Bitterblossom and Smokestack - Upkeep triggers

Asked by Arvail 9 years ago

It's my upkeep. I have a Bitterblossom and there's an active Smokestack on the field. Both designate that their triggered abilities occur at the beginning of a player's upkeep. Can I sac the token generated by Bitterblossom to Smokestack ? Why or why not?

The active player's abilities trigger first (in the order that player chooses). If the opponent controls the stax, Bitterblossom triggers, then Smokestack , so Smokestack 's ability resolves first, then you get the token.

If you control them both, you can choose to make it work your way. If your opponent controls the stax, you'll only get the token after sacrificing.

Note that the abilities technically don't trigger in an order of their controller's choosing. They trigger simultaneously, and their controllers choose the order in which they are put onto the stack.

Does that mean someone could also place something else on the stack in between those two abilities (not necessarily myself)?

Yes, in a way. The abilities are both put onto the stack before anyone can cast spells or activate any other abilities, so you would need to allow the topmost ability to resolve before you can do anything in between them.

Ah. Ok. That makes sense. Thanks.
