Bandit let werewolf enter play unflipped, then flip at same time?

Asked by MikealDH1 7 years ago

Geier Reach Bandit  Flip,is in play flipped. It says that when a werewolf enters play, then can transform that werewolf that just entered into play.

So if Bandit is out, flipped, Ulrich, enters into play, triggering it's +4/+4 on the stack. Before Ulrich Flips, the stack resolves giving +4/+4 Bonus to target creature, say the Bandit.

Then the stack triggers Bandit's ability of a werewolf, Ulrich, came into play, so may transform Ulrich, so Transform Ulrich, triggering his flipped ability of fighting target creature.

Another example.

Huntmaster comes into play, giving player 2 life, and a 2/2 wolf token, then Bandit ' s ability triggers, then transform Huntmaster, triggering Flipped Huntmaster ability of doing 2 damage to opponent, 2 damage to opponent's creature.

So is that how it works?

Yes, although a few caveats:

  • the stack never simply "resolves". Objects are placed on it and resolve one at a time, when players stop adding spells and abilities to it. Players can respond to any individual object on it (since it resolves one at a time).

  • When two or more objects from the same controller would enter the stack because of the same event, when say Vildin-Pack Alpha  Flip is in play and a werewolf like Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip with an ETB ability would enter the battlefield, the controller of those spells/abilities decides in which order they would resolve.

  • For example, in your first example, when Ulrich of the Krallenhorde  Flip enters the battlefield, there are two triggers on the stack from the same event - +4/+4 from Ulrich and a transform from Vildin-Pack Alpha  Flip. If you order these so that the transform ability resolves first, this will trigger Ulrich's "moon" side ability, allowing it to fight with another creature. This will be put on the stack above the +4/+4 from the "sun" side and resolve before it.

  • If you order the above triggers the other way around, your original scenario will occur.

Ok, thanks. I agree with your answer, is there a rules number quote, citation summary number thing, that I can put on deck page, and that can give to opponents, judges, if any question this.

Reason I ask, is that I can see why some may think that may have to choose whether werewolf come into play unflipped, gets ETB ability, but then does not get to flip from flipped Bandit ability,

Or

Come into play flipped, because of flipped Bandit, but does not get ETB ability.

I have already asked my friend who was a official judge, and he said that I do not get to have Ulrich enter into play, get +4/+4, then flip, fight creature, because of Bandit.

He said I had to either choose for Ulrich to enter either unflipped, or flipped, because of flipped Bandit, but that I could not have both, unflipped, and flipped.

I think others will same the same, argue, etc, so I am probably going to need a official source to PROVE what you told me.

Thanks for your answer

Your judge friend may have misread Vildin-Pack Alpha  Flip. The only text you need to prove this point is the one on the cards themselves. Importantly, VPA can transform werewolves into their "moon" side after they enter the battlefield, not as they enter the battlefield.

In the future, please remember to link all cards in your question.
