Awaken+Manland?

Asked by William_Norris 8 years ago

What do you think will happen if you use awaken on like a Treetop Village ? Will it still be able to turn into an ape with trample but with counters on it or will it just be an elemental ?

The counters are put on the card, which becomes an x/x creature. You can still transform your land into an ape, which would make it a x+3/x+3 ape with trample

With something like awaken 4, the land will be a 7/7 when activated, and a 4/4 when not activated. Also, this seems more Q/A.

Where's this card "Awaken"? It sounds fun to play, but I can't find it.

How this works is that multiple characteristic defining abilities that effect the same layer for one card, so they're applied in timestamp order. In this case we have the following P/T layers to deal with:

7b: Power/Toughness setting effects.
- Awakened effect from Sheer Drop sets it to 0/0
- Treetop Village's activated ability sets it to 3/3

So, whatever happens 2nd is what will end up being used in 7b. If you awakened Treetop Village after it had been activated that turn it would be a 0/0 (with counters), but you could activate it again afterwards to give that effect a later timestamp. Then...

7d: Power/Toughness changes from counters.
- X +1/+1 counters are on the land.

So, if we're talking about Sheer Drop "Awakening" Treetop Village which is then activated, we have a 3/3 with 3 +1/+1 counters on it, a 6/6. Now, if it was Liege of the Tangle putting an "Awakening" counter on Treetop Village it would be an 8/8, and when you activated Treetop Village it would be a 3/3 until end of turn.

Oh, and what type it is would be determined in an earlier layer, 4. Type changes are all determined in timestamp order, and unless it says "Becomes X in addition to its other types" like you see on Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth then it overwrites all previous types.

Abilities like trample remain unchanged unless a later effect says "loses this ability" or a static effect is changing it, like Archetype of Aggression, Humility or Walking Sponge.

I see FancyTuesday's logic and point, although I'm interested in knowing the effects of awakening a Lumbering Falls through a Sorcery, and then activating its ability. The card text says the land becomes a 3/3 green and blue Elemental creature with hexproof until end of turn. Emphasis on the "until end of turn." Would a Lumbering Falls and other manlands like it, lose the full time 0/0 creature status given by awakening? Unlike Liege of the Tangle which places an awakening token on the land, Awakening only changes the card type in a single instance making its effect permanent, while the activated ability of the manlands change the type and specify an end condition. The reason this is important, awakening a land makes it susceptible to sorcery speed removal effects, such as Sheer Drop, but if activating the manlands ability after awakening the land allows that land to lose its creature type at end of turn, your awakened manlands gain a significant advantage over other types of awakened lands.

Lumbering Falls
Sheer Drop

Just like Power and Toughness, type changes are handled in a layer, specifically layer 4. Awaken gives an indefinite type change to add "Creature" and Man-Lands' activated abilities give a type change to add "Creature" that ends at end of turn. So layer 4 looks like this:

Note that Lumbering Falls doesn't say anything about it losing types, only that the effects of its activated ability end. The type "Creature" will still be granted by Sheer Drop.

The speed of removal has no barring on what it can remove, only when it can remove it. Instant speed Murder may target a Creature-Land at any time, sorcery speed Stone Rain may only destroy a land at any time you may cast a sorcery.
