As many +1/+1 counters as I want??

Asked by Colten_Lee 9 years ago

If I control 2 Enduring Scalelord, and a +1/+1 counter gets placed on any of my creatures, can I essentially build the two dragons up as big as I want??

Yes. This would lead to an infinite combo.

@ShamaLamaDingDong: That's somewhat misleading.

When a combo is actually infinite, the game ends in a draw because it has entered a repeating loop of mandatory actions. But that's not what's happening here.

Enduring Scalelord's ability is a "may" ability. It isn't mandatory, so you must eventually choose not to put another counter on Enduring Scalelord. You'll then proceed with the rest of the game.

I have a question about this, or any like this. In a competitive setting, am I allowed to show them that the triggers only stop when I decide to stop placing the counters and tell my opponent that they are both going to be X/X by the time I'm finished?

Yes. This is a process known as short cutting. As long as the loop will always produce the same result in the same manner on every iteration, you can propose a shortcut through N iterations of the loop in order to not have to manually perform the loop N times.

Any player may request to take an action at any point in the loop.
