Armory of Iroas (and similar) vs Shroud Interaction?

Asked by sparta88 4 years ago

Hi guys, I've got a quick question regarding ability interactions for a deck that I'm working on for Tiny Leaders;

If I equip an item with Shroud Lightning Greaves , to a creature that has Armory of Iroas already equipped and attack with it, does said creature still gain the +1/+1 counters due to shroud being an effect on said creature?

Or a followup related question; If I'm using Drana, Liberator of Malakir , and have shroud via the item, will her ability still effect her when it gets triggered?

Thanks guys, looking forward to hearing how this works, as it will impact whether or not I try to run Lightning Greaves or Swiftfoot Boots in the deck I'm building.

Cheers!

Shroud specifically prevents an object from being targeted by a spell or ability. Armory of Iroas 's first ability doesn't target. Neither does Drana's ability. In both cases, the creature with Lightning Greaves would still get a counter.

Only abilities that specifically say "target" actually target.

If, however, the ability said "put a +1/+1 counter on TARGET creature you control," then you could not choose a creature with shroud.

That's wonderful news! Thank you so much for clarifying how the interactions work, it sounds like I need to prioritize getting Lightning Greaves if I can.

Thanks a bunch!

Do keep in mind that the Equip ability does target, so if you plan to put Armory of Iroas and Lightning Greaves on the same creature, you'll need to equip the Armory first. If you equip the Greaves first, you can't target the creature to equip the Armory.

If you don't want to have to stress out over this, an option would be to get the (slightly more expensive) Swiftfoot Boots . One more to cast, one more to equip, but it's hexproof instead of shroud, which is more flexible for your side of the table.
