are Commander cards illegal in modern

Asked by thechrisgeddes 6 years ago

After not playing MTG for a long time I picked it back up because some friends form work. So I bought a green elf commander deck.(Didn't really know what I was doing at the time) I ended up liking it a lot and built a elf deck out of it. Just started playing with some other guys that said some of the cards are illegal. Only card I could find on the ban list in modern that I have in my deck is sol ring. Please explain.

Yes they are illegal in modern.

Modern consists of all booster releases beginning with Eighth Edition and Mirrodin. This definition will remain the same forever, and cards will not rotate out of the format. New cards released outside of booster releases, such as those in Magic: The Gathering Commander, are not part of Modern, and will not become part of it in the future.

Only cards that have been printed in a normal set since 8th edition are legal. Cards printed in supplemental sets are only modern legal if they were reprints of cards that were printed in a modern legal set. So the commander cards that are reprints from a modern legal set are legal, but the new ones are not.

To follow up on something else: a card will only appear on the ban list if it would otherwise have been legal in that format. Cards that were never printed in a Modern-legal set won't be mentioned on the ban list (although many card search engines will at least tell you they're illegal in Modern).

Note that the Conspiracy sets, while printed as boosters after 8th edition, are not considered for modern because they were in a supplemental product. Planeswalker deck cards like Ajani, Valiant Protector are legal in modern (though not very good). The test is was this (a) printed after 8th edition (b) into the standard format.
