Archangel of Thune trampling a card with protection

Asked by vbcnxm_ 9 years ago

So Let's say I've gotArchangel of Thune of sufficient size and Akroma's Memorial out, and my opponent has a creature which can block the archangel that has protection from white and flying.

Now I know how trample and protection interact, you assign lethal and continue on to the next creature or player in line if you can.

So let's say Archangel of Thune attacks and is blocked by this nebulous protected creature, the archangel assigns lethal, and tramples over, but does her lifelink trigger on the trample, thus pumping everything?

The lifelink is triggered twice because it's dealing damage to two different sources, which triggers lifelink from the two different sources which gives you the +2 counters.

All the combat damga in a step is dealt at the same time, regardless of how many creatures/planeswalkers/players being damaged by any number of creatures. Your trampling Archangel of Thune will deal damage to the defending player and the blocking creature at the same time.

Yes, it does, you do not deal damage to the creature with protection, but if there is any damage left over, it will trample onto the opponent's life total, thus triggering the Archangel.

That's not correct X_Elemental-Remix_X. A creature with lifelink dealing combat damage only gains you life once, even if it hit multiple objects in the same combat step.

Also, Archangel of Thune 's Gatherer entry:

  • A creature with lifelink dealing combat damage is a single life-gaining event. For example, if two creatures you control with lifelink deal combat damage at the same time, Archangel of Thunes ability will trigger twice. However, if a single creature with lifelink deals combat damage to multiple creatures, players, and/or planeswalkers at the same time (perhaps because it has trample or was blocked by more than one creature), the ability will trigger only once.

X_Elemental-Remix_X That's not correct. The creature (2/2) for the sake of argument would have 2 damage assigned to it but it would be prevented, being that it has pro white. Damage cannot be both prevented and dealt. Mind that dealing and assigning damage are not the same thing. Since no damage, no lifelink and no trigger on the second ability.

However, the 1 point of trample damage to the player WOULD cause you to gain 1 point of life, "thus pumping everything," via Archangel of Thune 's triggered ability.

And to GreatSword's point, the lifegain happens as a single event, regardless of the number of "sources."

Sorry, guess I misunderstood your post, now that I think about it. Wasn't thinking about the redundant lifelinks.

My bad, I was thinking that because say it didn't have protection you'd get +2 counters, I was probably thinking about something else. I apologize for my inaccurate assumption.

Just pointing out that lifelink is not a triggered ability. It's a static ability; the lifegain happens concurrently with the damage.

If you are saying that the creature with protection from white is blocking the archangel, no lifelink will occur from this block.

The protection from white will prevent all damage dealt to the creature, and only the supposed trampling damage will gain you life.
