Archangel Avacyn ETB Trigger

Asked by Zurnic 8 years ago

I'm wondering when you have to acknowledge the ETB trigger of Archangel Avacyn  Flip. Would you have to announce the trigger after she comes into play or would saying that your creature doesn't die after combat damage be sufficient to say that you acknowledge the trigger?

Usually it's good sportsmanship to announce the trigger.

Officially (tournament-wise), you have to announce all your triggers, otherwise it's a "missed trigger" and is a penalty.

In casual, at least what I do is say "trigger" and point at the card from which the trigger came from and that's it. I let my opponent read the trigger or explain further if asked.

Edit:

It's good sportsmanship to announce the trigger as it happens, so when Avacyn enters the battlefield, you'd then announce her trigger. Not wait a step or phase later and have to explain to opponents "why your creatures just didn't die."

Tournament rules (I thought) were that you had to acknowledge the trigger the first time it was relevant to the game state or something similar. Just wondering.

For Avacyn's trigger, you can wait to acknowledge it until the first time it would actually have an effect on the visible game state. Waiting to say "my creatures have indestructible" until after combat damage has been dealt is acceptable in a tournament setting as long as there hasn't yet been any reason to say something before then.

Exactly when you have to acknowledge a trigger depends on what it does and how it works. Because Avacyn's trigger doesn't require any choices, doesn't change any game rules, and doesn't visibly affect the game state, you don't need to acknowledge it right away.
