Approach of the Second Sun+Aethersnatch

Asked by Colten_Lee 5 years ago

At a local edh the other day and the following happened.

My opponent cast Approach of the Second Sun for his second time. I Aethersnatch it. What happens??

We played it as I gain 7, and it went in his deck.

He said I should have won bc it was the second cast, and from his hand. I said no bc I haven't cast it at all...let alone from my hand.

Did you cast Approach of the Second Sun from your hand? No, it was cast from your opponent's hand. So you played correctly.

Follow up:

If it was the opponent's second time casting Approach and I used Aethersnatch, what happens?

That was the initial question. The answer is, if Approach of the Second Sun is resolving and it wasn't cast, wasn't cast from your hand, or wasn't the second time it was cast, it will gain you 7 life and go to it's owner's library.

If you cast an Approach of the Second Sun, then later you're opponent uses Mindclaw Shaman to cast your Approach of the Second Sun from your hand and you Aethersnatch it, that will let you win the game, but outside of a niche circumstance like that you're not going to win Aethersnatching an Approach of the Second Sun.

Good heavens, I didn't read carefully. I'm terribly sorry about that!
