About "YOU" have hexproof vs Sacrifice Spells

Asked by bravo8wing 5 years ago

702.11c Hexproof on a player means You cant be the target of spells or abilities your opponents control. #

CARDS:

Sample Spirit of the Hearth reads (Flying, "YOU" have hexproof) [you assuming the player owning this card.]

VS

Abolisher of Bloodlines reads (When this creature transforms into Abolisher of Bloodlines, target opponent sacrifices three creatures.)

As owner of the Spirit of the Hearth that is in play. and I have hexproof and my opponents card transforms to abolisher of bloodlines and we are the only two playing. will the target opponent sacrifices creatures from abolisher of bloodlines wont work on me because I have hexproof from spirit of the heart? and I wont need to sacrifice a creature on the field?

Is this correct how I understand this?

You are correct. Because you have Hexproof, you cannot be the target of any spells and abilities your opponent controls. This includes spells or abilities where the effect would remove non-hexproofed targets.

One minor point, you do not have protection from spells like Smallpox that do not target.

Also, it is helpful if you directly link the cards in question for reference. Use the following:

[[Abolisher of Bloodlines]]

Abolisher of Bloodlines

With Spirit of the Hearth (and any other spell or permanent) "you" refers to its controller, not necessarily its owner.

An alternative note on that interaction:

If that card read "Target Player" instead of "Target Opponent":

Your opponent, as the only legal "target player" left, would have to target themselves!

And that is not a "may" ability, it would have to be fulfilled by any legal target as long as any legal targets are still available.

This is of course not the case here, but still interesting to note

Duress requires a target and Teyo, the Shieldmage means you are not a legal target for their spells. Together, this means Duress should not have been cast, as there were no legal targets. If that’s not what happened, you should report it as a bug.
