A very simple question for which I can not find a definitive answer concerning casting spells?

Asked by Bantha1342 6 years ago

The following is my understanding of when I can play certain spells. Please let me know if I am incorrect.

  1. Creatures, Enchantments, and Artifacts only when it is my turn and these must be cast during either main phase when I have priority.
  2. Sorcery spells may only be cast when I have priority during either main phase of any ones turn.
  3. Instants or activated abilities of permanents at any phase of any turn when I have priority.

I know this is simple and I thought I understood these aspects of the game, but maybe not? Thanks for any help!

2 is incorrect.

Instants and activated abilities can be used whenever you have priority (regardless of whose turn it is).

Everything else (sorceries and any permanent spells [creatures, enchantments, planeswalkers, artifacts]) can only be cast when you have priority in your own main phase.

Cards will always specify if they are an exception to those timing rules.

Also the stack has to be empty for you to cast anything that's not an instant or activated ability.

Throw Planeswalkers into category 1, and some permanents have flash which moves them into category 3. Some abilities say "activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery," which moves them into category 1, regardless of whether you have an ability that moves sorceries out of that category.
