(8/8) green with lure blocked by 3 creatures, first of them (3/3) with protection from green, what happens next?

Asked by revencio 9 years ago

let's say I attack with a green creature 8/8 with lure, the opponent blocks inevitably with a 3/3 creature, a 2/2 creature and mother of runes 1/1. then I choose the order:

8/8----3/3,2/2,mother of runes 1/1

then the opponent taps mother of runes to give protection from green to the first creature blocking (3/3)

3/3 is saved because of the protection, but, does the rest of damage (5) go through to the other two creatures making them die...???

Please link all cards in your questions. There is a formatting guide at the bottom of the page.

Mother of Runes

Lure

The other damage will go through. When you deal combat damage you have to assign lethal damage to a creature not kill it. This is why you can trample over indestructible creatures.

Damage assignment requires you to assign what WOULD BE lethal damage to the blocking creature before the application of any reduction or protection effects. That's why with Deathtouch you only have to assign 1 damage to each blocker, and why you can trample past protection and indestructibility.

Their 3/3 would live because the damage which was assigned (which was lethal damage) is reduced to 0 due to protection, but the other creatures will still take damage.

thanks for the answers! just to clarify..I guess you took into account that the 8/8 does not trample, and sorry for not linking the cards, I didnt know how to it at first!

Trample just adds "The defending player" as an option at the end of the damage assignment order we discussed above.

If your 8/8 had trample, after assigning 3, 2, and 1 damage to the three blockers, it could also assign 2 damage to the defending player. Since your creature didn't have trample, the fact that it was blocked means none of the 'excess' damage will be dealt to the defending player.
