7 Grusilda, Monster Masher Questions

Asked by tybonel13 5 years ago

I am building a Grusilda Un-EDH deck and I have some questions.

  1. If I used Grusilda to combine a Graf Rats and a Midnight Scavengers, could they still meld into a Chittering Host?

  2. If one half of a combination can transform and does so, what happens to the combination.

  3. If both halves can transform and one does so, do both halves transform and it becomes a combination of their other sides?

  4. If one half melds with another creature and does so, what happens with the combination?

  5. If one half of a combination belongs to an opponent who leaves the game, what becomes of the remaining half?

  6. If a combination is exiled and returned to the battlefield due to a card like Seal Away or Otherworldly Journey, what happens with the combination?

  7. The wording of Grusilda implies that the combination has two separate names and mana costs. Is this correct?

Disclaimer: none of these are covered by the Unstable FAQ, so the answers are not concrete.

Still, I will try my best:

1/ Yes.
2/ Stays the same.
3/ No, this is the same as 2.
4/ You cannot meld outside of the combination that exists.
5/ The other half is sacrificed as a state-based action.
6/ It will return as two separate creatures with no memory of their previous existance.
7/ They have the combined name and CMC of both cards. You do not have Crypt Rats costing 2B or Geth, Lord of the Vault 4BB, you have Crypt Rats Gath, Lord of the Vault costing 6BBB.

For 3, I would say both halves do transform, as you are directed to transform the creature, which is combined. This is somewhat of the problem with Silver boarder, as their rules aren't as well defined.

For 4, what happens is you exile both cards comprising the combined creature, then look for cards you own in exile that can be melded (as this is the process for how Meld works on the 3 combinations). This means that the other half of your combine creature will sit in exile.

For 5, The other half only gets sacrificed if it's an augment that is no longer attached to a host. In most cases half of the creature leaving the game will just result in a smaller creature.

For 6, I'm pretty sure they return as a single creature. When a Host/Augment get's blinked they return combined, for some reason I don't understand, and I'm pretty sure that ruling does extend to these combinations, and to long delay blink effects like Seal Away.

Seeing as for a bunch of these questions you're getting very different answers, I would ultimately suggest submitting some of these questions to Blogatog to get get official rulings.

let's say someone plays a card like ixalan's binding that interacts with a target and cards with the same name as that target and they target a combined creature, does that card interact with non combined creatures that have the same name as one of the creatures or does it not do anything because the combined creature has the names combined into one? i know this is an extreme edge case, but i'm just wondering.

neotazman: In your example, Ixalan's Binding will affect all cards that share a name with the combined cards. The regular rules of the game do account for situations where a card has multiple names (I believe because of some cards that were printed in the Conspiracy sets):

201.2a Two or more objects have the same name if they have at least one name in common, even if one or more of those objects have additional names. An object with no name doesn't have the same name as any other object, including another object with no name.

In the future: If you have a question related to an old discussion thread, it's better to ask the question in a new post versus replying to the old discussion. With the way this area of the site is set up, making a reply doesn't push a topic to the top of the list, so that means only the people who are still subscribed to receive notifications about it will be aware of your reply.
