2nd main phase lifelink

Asked by Hwedlor 7 years ago

ok, here is the scenario...

I have 3 1/1 servo on the battlefield that are getting ready to swing in on the attack phase.

Attack phase happens and I hit my opponents dome for 3, woot.

then in 2nd main phase I play Ondu Rising. This giving all creatures that attacked this turn lifelink for the turn.

This means that this card would do an immediate check and see the 3 attackers that have dealt damage already awarding me 3 life, correct?

No. Casting Ondu Rising in your second main phase will do nothing useful (unless you cast it for its Awaken cost) unless you have an additional combat.

Nothing in Magic ever applies retroactively to any event. Not to mention that Ondu Rising looks for the exact moment a creature attacks that turn. If it sees a creature attacking, it'll give that creature lifelink until end of turn, but it doesn't look back in the turn to before it was cast to see if the event happened there.

The key word here is the word "attacks" in the card text.

Whenever a creature attacks, it's a very specific point in the game. A creature only "attacks" when it is declared an attacker during the Declare Attackers step of a turn. No other time does a creature ever attack. So Ondu Rising looks for that exact moment to happen in that turn after it's been cast.

Ondu Rising doesn't give creatures that attacked lifelink, what it does is create a delayed triggered ability "Whenever a creature you control attacks this turn, it gains lifelink." That means, the next time you attack after casting Ondu Rising this turn the ability will trigger once for each creature you attack with. As you're casting it on the second main phase, that event is rather unlikely to occur, but not impossible.

@Hwedlor There wouldn't be anything on the rulings or erata for the card because it's not necessary. Nothing in the game works the way you are describing cards only have an effect after they have been played and not before.

If the card worked the way your hoping it would say something along the lines of 'Gain life equal to the combat damage target player has taken this turn'.
