How to Trade Online

The Trading Post forum

So what I want to do is trade Serra the Benevolent for a Karn Liberated . Of course I'd trade up to MSRP. But nobody at my LGS has a Karn. So I would love to do a trade online.

Are trades through TappedOut relatively safe, or do people just agree to the trade on TappedOut but do it through another website like Cardsphere? If I could, I'd love to do a trade just by using TappedOut because I'm not looking to get invested in a trading website.

Now I myself have never done a trade on the site, but if I remember right there is a merit system in place, like if you get dicked in the trade it can be placed as a mark on that person's account, and I think you can also see where they stand on past trades. Outside of that it's purely just how you'd sort a trade out on any social website, meet up if nearby or swap addresses.

I've completed 83 trades here on T/O as of today. One of the main things that people do to protect from losing their cards is that the person with the fewest completed trades usually sends first. If both traders don't have any completed trades, I would suggest requesting pictures and whatnot, and sending large trades with tracking -- I do trades at $20 or more with tracking, and less in pwe. You could also request for a signature to verify that it was received, but it's never really been an issue for me. I've never had any bad experiences here, so make sure you're being cautious and you should be fine.

Trading your first few times with established traders can help you develop a solid trading history yourself, and they can vouch for you if needed. I have over 130 completed trades here, and only 1-2 have been negative. Fortunately they weren't high-value or anything, so I still think this site is one of the better sites for trading that there is. I second the fact that you'll be required to send first if the other person has a good established trading history and you do not. Fortunately, established traders like keeping their perfect records intact, so you generally don't need to worry about them not sending as long as you hold up your end.

In addition to the previous responses, I’ll add a couple more pointers that should help you potentially match up on trade partners.

1) create your trade binder and keep your inventory and want list updated - the site attempts to match you up with other users that are looking for your available cards and/or have your wants. This is a good way to find a potential trade in addition to posting in the trading post forum.

2) enable chat with users that express an interest in making a trade - you can have a private chat to cover all the details of a potential deal and cover all expectations without spamming binder comments. It also helps create a rapport with that user so you can stay in communication.

Since starting trading on this site, I’ve found it to be such a consistently excellent experience with other established traders that I’ve pretty much stopped trading anywhere else outside my LGS and local playgroup. There are a lot of really excellent users on this site that trade, with many I trust just as much as the everyday players I trade with at my LGS.

Thanks to great users, consistent communication and clear expectations, I’ve made roughly 40 trades on T/O with individual TCG mid values up to $2,000 and had no issues or concerns in any of those cases. It’s a great trading community for those that establish themselves and communicate regularly.
