Caution With PhotogenicParasympathetic

The Trading Post forum

I paid him for the Foil Karn he posted, got the pics, and he said hed send it and have tracking to me the day after at the latest. This was 4-5 days ago. He has been active since then and has not responded to my messages. I would like to hope it will show up one of these days, but Im not hopeful.

Thank you for the warning. He posted on my wall last night, so he hasn't been entirely inactive. I sincerely hope he sends it. I've been scammed before (by a trader with 70 completed trades) and it sucks, but I lost less than $20. A foil Karn is a much bigger deal.

I hope it works out. I've traded with photogenic in the past, they are a cool person. I really dont think they would do that. But I've been scammed here before too by users that had been extremely active on the site, twice in a row too (DrFunk27 who is no longer active and has since been confirmed a thief).

I just finished a trade with them about 2 weeks ago. It was a smaller trade (only $20 in value) but I had no issue with them. Perhaps they are busy or something came up? Idk but I would keep your head up and be patient and hopeful

Why not tag him in this post ?

Maybe some rule would do, such as no sell-offs, or something.

yeaGO, I think that if people are willing to buy cards from one another, there should be no rule barring it. I think it should be cautioned however that the nature of this site leaves sellers quite anonymous other than the amount of activity you can track within the confines of this website. I would urge anyone buying cards on T/O to make sure that they pay via Goods and Services over Paypal to keep yourself protected from potential theft.

100% agree. Its a mere +4% to the sale for buyer protection.

Yeah that's fine but someone with malicious intent would likely be using the site to gather email addresses of victims, who they could then talk into not using buyer protection and such in private. And dumping lots of things at one time is one thing that the open trade system was meant to protect against, but someone engaged in a sell-off is necessarily racking up lots of them at one time, which this site wasn't really meant for....

I dont know how to tag people or I would have. Ive traded with him before which is why I didnt have a problem paying for it, and I waited until I saw more activity from him with no response before making this post. Im not saying I got scammed, yet, just warning other people of caution.

Rather than ban the type of trade, you could instigate two trade-related rules:

(1) All communications regarding trades are to be performed via this site's communication systems.

(2) It is against the rules to dissuade a purchasing party from using buyer protection.

Then perhaps have a sticky at the top of the Trading thread with some advice on protecting yourself in trades, and links to buyer protection websites. Perhaps even a little quiz you read anything on that forum section (akin to the quiz for upvoting), if that is possible.

Here's how you tag people:

It addresses almost everything, except that I'm still pretty uncomfortable with people racking up so many simultaneous trades.

I'm okay with them drawing down their collection but allowing this is pretty risky.

Obviously if you've traded with the person before and trust them, then it's none of my business, I'm just trying to protect against soliciting new users.

Thanks for the brainstorm

Certainly no one should be dissuading anyone from using buyer protection, but I highly doubt that anyone is. If someone says to you not to use buyer's protection, and that isn't a gigantic red flag, there's no helping you. I understand that Vergil_Redgrail has done business with this person before and the nature of this transaction is still ambiguous.

I think a more relevant warning would be that it is highly advised to always utilize any payment service's buyer protection. It is cheap, and even if you've done business with a person before, it's an additional tiny fee on top of your purchase for peace of mind. Buyers are always favored in disputes as long as they utilize the protections offered to them.

I paid through Paypal, but I cant see which type of transaction it was processed as.

well. reading this thread hasnt bolstered my confidence in doing any trading here. Keep it simple I suppose is the lesson.

Dr.Ache While this thread is distressing, I have had a very good experience overall trading on this site. Admittedly I've been scammed once, but there are still many great traders on this site. Tappedout is still my preferred way to trade magic cards.

March 23, 2018 3:40 p.m.

I've had many great trades on the site and it is still my preferred way of trading (when trying to reach a larger pool of traders outside my LGS). That being said, I had set up a trade a while back with photogenicparasympathetic, and since he still had under 10 trades or so asked him to send first. He never did, but I wasn't out anything so I didn't push the issue any more than adding him to my posted list of unreliable traders on my trade binder page. I can't remember if the inactivity of the trade made it go to my completed trade list or if it simply vanished though.

March 24, 2018 2:12 a.m.

GeminiSpartanX it likely vanished. However, in your binder if you click 'show more' under successful trades, vanished trades appear, still saying neither party has received.

I have also done lots of seamless trading on this site before, however in my 3-4 years on this website, I have had 2 instances where I have run into trouble, and both were unable to respond. I think this site is mostly safe for people to trade on, but the degree of anonymity on this site can leave people susceptible. But just use common sense. Do you see this person interacting with people frequently? When's the last time they completed a trade/uploaded a deck/ updated their binder? Don't underestimate the peace of mind you can get through exchanging photos of the cards via email, so you know that you both agree on the condition of the card. I honestly prefer to trade through FB these days, because it's less anonymous, and there's just a wider audience of people and pool of cards, but this website is fine for trading as long as you keep your wits about you.
