Yellow Profile Icon?

TappedOut forum

This may seem like a silly question, but my profile icon turned yellow, and when I click it, the "upgrade" tab is highlighted in yellow. Why? Is it urging me to upgrade my account? :P

Thanks,

---Crayfish

Have you clicked it? Perhaps someone paid for your upgrade. It's been known to happen.

Really guys?

It's pretty obvious it's just a new feature from the most recent site update overnight.

It's just a faster way to choose to upgrade your account. It's to get your attention and entice you to upgrade.

Now every time you see the gold head you think - "Huh... I wonder if I should upgrade?"

Marketing 101 folks. This site doesn't run on fairy dust.

I think it's called 'begging'. TO really really really wants us to upgrade.

I assumed that's what it was, but rather than speculate I was just hoping for some confirmation.

xcn - No, the administrators who run and support and PAY for this site really want you to upgrade because even a one time $5 payment is $5 more dollars they don't have to spend out of their own pocket to maintain a site that HUNDREDS of people use on a daily basis.

Your existence and enjoyment on this site is being maintained in large part because of a small handful of people.

It isn't begging and calling it begging is honestly, in my opinion, ignorant and incredibly rude.

It's a nonprofit website made purely with the community in mind. Contributing flat amounts once, or even again here and there, or even giving a continued subscription doesn't mean you succumbed to a website's "begging." It means you care about this community and it's future and are willing to show your respect for the people here and the people who WORK HARD to run it by handing over a small fraction of your paycheck.

Again... no fairies were harmed in the making of T/O.

TMBRLZ I'm well aware of all of that. It's not as annoying as Wikipedia's donatedonatedonate banners, but it always bugs me, probably irrationally.

xcn: seriously though, why does wikipedia even need money?

CheeseBro Because it's non profit? It's literally not that different than tappedout. It's built on the backs of the people who use it. An encyclopedia on everything, in part written by everyone. Do you realize how much stuff is on wiki? And how many sites are part of the wiki network? That's a lot of network space. That's a lot of servers and memory and money invested into top of the line networking interfaces to reduce latency from high traffic.

And none of that is being backed by a major corporation and none of the information requires you paying money.

It's a nonprofit group. They don't seek to make money off their users in any way or form and they don't forcibly subject you to advertisements. Wikipedia, Tappedout, a lot of Christian radio stations... one of my PC gaming clans shut down our website and just relied on facebook groups because they weren't getting enough donations from users to keep up with the costs of the website and running our game servers.

I don't mean to derail but this is a really easy concept guys. Nothing is free. Buy 1 Get 1 Free isn't even free. You just got a discount on the first one.

That's why websites like T/O and Wiki ask for donations, and when in need, make a point of it. We pay them because we like T/O. We want it to stay here.

Twitch streamers - People playing games get paid money by people watching them play games as a sign that those people watching want to keep watching. When somebody does well at something, the first instinct is to pay them in some manner.

It's a fairly straightforward concept. I'm done ranting about this.

Back to my first comment - Golden head = Marketing 101. No fairies.

Ah, glad this was cleared up. I was afraid it was because of this:

"TappedOut T-Shirt

Exchange 18 tokens

(you have 4)

Arriving via thopter shortly."

Not sure if this is a glitch, or if someone actually ordered a T-shirt under my name without asking for a size, shipping address, or general permission.
