Beautiful and sleek interface. Control are pretty obvious, which is always good. Buttons laid out nicely and clearly.

Just one thing - ability to add counters to cards not present?

October 1, 2015 4:05 p.m.

Very cool :) Couple things:

I assume the menu that popped up when clicking on the card in the "old" tester is not implemented yet, but if it is, it's not showing. There's also no poison counter next to the life.

When you scroll, there seems to be a lot of unnecessary space at the bottom of the page. Pic:

enter image description here

Also, the photos for the tokens don't show up automatically, only when scrolled on. Additionally, an Eldrazi Scion token produces a thopter image (haven't tested any other tokens yet). When testing on Swarm and Conquer 2, all the tokens show up as spirits. Pic:

I'll do some more testing when I have more time, but it looks fun :)

A bit hard to see the cards in hand. But otherwise great.

Beautiful! My only problem is that the cards in hand and field are too small. also, if you could implement commands like in the old on such as B for putting a card on the battlefield and N for next turn.

Excellent new interface but I also agree with all of Famous' points.

i am also very interested to hear about mechanics of the playtester across multiple devices. please let me know!

AwesomeName says... #8

Yeah, I agree with Famous that there is too much scroll space on the bottom of the page and that the hand is too small. Here's also some things missing from the old playtester:

  • Posion
  • Facedown
  • Counters
  • Put cards on the bottom of your library
October 1, 2015 4:31 p.m.

I found no way to move cards to the bottom of the library, which is very relevant with the new scry mulligan afoot. In addition, there's no way to change your life in increments - starting life total is 40 by default, but should be able to go to 20, and possibly change by 5s or 10s.

October 1, 2015 4:32 p.m.

I'd also like to see the field be a little wider so that the exile zone can be in line with the hand and graveyard.

lemmingllama says... #11

The cards are a little too small to easily read. It may just be because the exiled pile is under the rest leading to sizing errors. The fact that your hand increases in size when you draw enough cards certainly helps explain the sizing.

Currently it seems to be missing the option to add counters to cards.

The images for cards seem to be cropped a little. I can understand wanting to remove the borders, but it also chops off the set symbol a little on some cards.

I encountered a bug where you hover over a card so the large version pulls up, then double click it to put it onto the battlefield, the pop-up remains even after you move the mouse. This also happens when you have cards popped up, then mulligan or reset.

Additionally, drawing a card will automatically bring up the pop-up of the drawn card. This is fine until you draw multiple cards at once, leaving several pop-ups in place.

Finally with the hover over, hovering over your deck will show the pop-up of the top card. This leads to sometimes seeing the next card when I didn't mean to.

Of things I like though, I love the animation when you try to drag a card into a place it doesn't belong, and similarly I like how it shows the previous location of the cards. Overall it's pretty good, just that I deliberately tried to find bugs and gimmicks.

October 1, 2015 4:37 p.m.

Adding to lemmingllama's comment about the hand getting bigger, I really like how the size of the hand zone in the current playtester doesn't change regardless of cards in hand. Doing that in this playtester may cause issues on some touch devices, but overall I think that option is better than having to scroll around the page to see all of your zones at once.

Interesting...
Problem 1: Wasted space. There isn't space for a ghave deck that popped 26 tokens. The cards' pictures fall over into the hand box.
Problem 2: (personal preference) I don't like snap to grid unless I am working on excel spreadsheets for work
Problem 3: I like having the hotkeys...
Problem 4: Make the exile zone more noticeable. Also, obligatory plea for the general zone
Problem 5: Mass clicking on the deck to draw cards, place cards onto the battlefield etc makes the cards pictures pop up and obscure the screen making it extremely hard to remove
Problem 6: The board looks pasty, if that makes sense. Essentially, problem 3-4...
Things I personally like:
Personally, not much... :(. For me there was nothing wrong with the old playtester (i would've just wanted a command zone). The only thing that I like is the header that is now there...

I do not wish to offend anybody who likes/loves it or to the creators... I just (to put it simply) don't like it.

Making "next turn" untap all cards automatically would be a good addition, IMO.

FancyTuesday says... #16

When there are multiple tokens available to a deck the popup image for every token is always the last token in the list. Tested on all my decks and it's always the last token's image.

Don't much care for the layout or smaller element sizes.

October 1, 2015 5:48 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #17

But the real question is ... how well does the playtester shuffle?

Also FAMOUSWATERMELON, the token issue is most likely an issue on my end. I'll go check my tokens and see if I made any mistakes.

October 1, 2015 5:53 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #18

-Logician, the extra space is different for each desktop. I don't have as much extra space so yeago can't use that effectively.

October 1, 2015 5:55 p.m.

-Logician says... #19

@Femme_Fatale Fair point. I'm actually a bit surprised that, given the amount of programming and computer work in general that you do, that you don't use a 1080p resolution monitor. shrug It's just a bit surprising is all.

But yeah, good point. At 1080p, the size is actually pretty nice because I fan fit two of these playtesters side-by-side.

October 1, 2015 6:14 p.m.

On phone, the cards stack in a weird fashion, compared to the old tester where there were neat piles of three.

And to a certain extent, I agree with miracleHat about needing a new tester. I mean, the old one works great and has a pretty similar look to it. Unless the actual code in the old one prevents certain features from working well (tokens, for example), couldn't the new stuff just be implemented into the old one (such as the zoom when rolling over the cards)?

October 1, 2015 7:05 p.m.

jonhydude says... #21

I know you can't do this in the current playtester on this site, but can you add +1/+1 counters to lands? Awaken sorta needs this to playtest easier.

October 1, 2015 7:15 p.m.

jonhydude You can definitely do that in the current tester...

October 1, 2015 7:18 p.m.

MindAblaze says... #23

Command Zone for EDH testing? Minimal importance, as I usually just throw them in the exile zone, but it'd be a QoL improvement.

Otherwise I love it. Very usable on my iPhone.

October 1, 2015 8:04 p.m. Edited.

MindAblaze says... #24

Upon further review, I can't drag and drop cards from my library to my hand, and the "Draw" button only lets me draw a specific card.

jonhydude says... #25

FAMOUSWATERMELON Oh, how do you do that? I've forgotten after such a long time.

Not liking the size of the play field and card readability.. I playtest my decks side by side, often overlapping my windows while watching videos..

My first impression only. Gonna give it a go.

-Edit: Why does the life start at 40? o.O

October 2, 2015 12:43 a.m. Edited.

FancyTuesday says... #28

The new playtest leaves unused space to either side because it's confined to a .container .row which is center aligned and has a fixed maximum width of 970px regardless of how high your resolution is or how big your window is. That's a lot of unused space for those of us with big ol monitors, less than half the width of your standard 1920x1080 and I shudder to think what this would look like on one of the 4ks that're becoming popular.

So it is important that yeaGO sees what it looks like and how people are using it. As it is, it's not great for those of us rocking the very cutting edge of 8 years ago. Probably best to dump TO's default div organization altogether, or at least remove the max width in the playtester to allow elements to use the horizontal space they have.

October 2, 2015 1:23 a.m.

FancyTuesday says... #29

Changing the container to container-fluid would fix it, but you have to confine other elements to max widths or you get really wide buttons and such.

Fullscreen if you're too lazy to open in a new tab

RussischerZar says... #30

The first thing I noticed that you can hover over "Library" (the text) and see what the next 20ish cards are. This shouldn't be enabled by default but rather be an option that you can enable.

Don't really have much time to give it a thorough look but that's what I got for now :)

October 2, 2015 9:06 a.m.

A few things I noticed immediately...

  • My life total is set to 40 by default. The playtester could set that according to the deck's format.
  • There is no second life counter. I'd like to have one to keep track of the life I payed and one for the life I've caused my "opponent" to lose.
  • The layout is a bit messy, it doesn't make use of the full width of the screen. Skimming over previous comments, I see this as been mentioned before. Here's a screenshot nonetheless.

Bildschirmfoto13

I'll post more later as I find it.

October 12, 2015 12:18 a.m.

Issues

  • Whenever a card changes zones as result of a click, be it from deck to hand or from hand to field, the popup appears and stays open until I hover the card. See screenshot 1.
  • When playing the last card from hand while the popup is open, it will stay open and can't be removed anymore. See Screenshot 2. Edit: it will go away when hovering the card on the field.
  • Moving a tapped card untaps it.
  • Stacking cards has horizontal offset issues when stacking onto tapped cards.
  • Unintentional mulligans and restarts happen. I'd move the buttons away from the very frequented "next turn" button, and please, add a confirmation popup.
  • The draw button would better be named fetch or search for clarity.
  • The grouping of the buttons makes little sense to me. The top group contains two buttons that are rarely used during the game, and one that is used all the time, for example. I'd put "restart and "mulligan" in their own group, then put the others in a group sorted by usage frequency.

Bildschirmfoto14Bildschirmfoto15

Suggestions

  • The "token" button could be hidden when not used.
  • the "draw" button could be supplemented with a "shuffle afterwards" checkbox.

System Info

  • Screen resolutin: 1360 X 768
  • Browser: Firefox 38.0 for ubuntu
  • OS: Kubuntu 12.04 LTS precise pangolin

Oh, and a click on "Mulligan" with an empty hand will draw six cards, hahaha.

FOLKS

We are ready for a fresh round of feedback.

October 14, 2015 12:42 p.m.

TOKENS WORK!!!!!!!! :)

...but they also go into your graveyard and stay there, which probably shouldn't happen. I'm very much liking the note section though. Another quick note, cards probably shouldn't tap in your hand.

October 14, 2015 1:03 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #36

But they don't show up in the actual playtester ...

October 14, 2015 1:57 p.m.

Popups work properly now, and cards stay tapped when moving. Good to see the restart/mull buttons are safe now.

There's still the issue with the offset when stacking onto a tapped card, but that's neglectable.

Tapping in the hand Iis okay by me, as it allows to play cards tapped. It's a feature!

October 14, 2015 2:07 p.m.

Femme_Fatale Do you mean in the "old" one? Because they certainly do in the new one.

October 14, 2015 3:45 p.m.

Quite nice.

Bugs that I noticed:

  • Can tap cards in hand.

  • Alt+e hotkey to add counter to all is a command (edit in the menu) of some browsers.

  • Hovering over the top card shows a popup of that card. Most of the time, that is not desired.

nighthawk85 says... #40

Can't scroll to a certain life total. I've been having to clich the plus or minus button for each point of health. Also, cards appear to small. When I split into two windows side by side, I can't scroll up to view my health unless I set my deck to private first so the notification saying deck is set to private appears and pushes health down a little.I also noticed I couldn't send a card to the Library bottom without first dragging it from the library to my hand, then moving to the bottom. This was because I couldn't select the card from the library list when clicking on library.

October 21, 2015 4:14 p.m.

jamkid23 says... #41

I can handle all the other changes, but can you please make the cards in the graveyard and library selectable again. Currently, if there I want to return the first card in my graveyard to my hand and there are seven cards above it, I have to move the seven cards out of the way first (or is this an attempt to add (realism).

Re-posting from other thread:
Very, VERY upset with the new playtester. I've used the old playtester several times a day for the past couple years, and I find this new one entirely unusable. I realize that some of that is probably just me getting used to a new thing, but some of it is genuine. In vaguely descending order:

  1. The way the cards snap into place. Bad bad bad. Lemme just put them where I wanna put them.

  2. The way the "hand" box extends downward rather than simply having the cards overlap a little. This necessitates frequent up-down scrolling, which is much more of a problem (in my opinion) than some parts of your cards being obscured.

  3. The "move to [zone]" options being in a drop-down menu when highlighting a card rather than being immediately available. Makes a lot of processes that were previously quick and simple now clunky and time-consuming (yes, I realize there are hotkeys).

  4. The aforementioned problems with the graveyard/exile zones being unmanageable.

  5. The "This collection is private" text at the top of the page. I don't think that needs to be present on the playtest page. Being on the edit page is certainly good enough (also contributes to unnecessary page length, thus exacerbating the scrolling problem).

  6. This one's just a small issue, but the command zone being between the library and hand is unnecessary. Being the least used/interacted-with zone, it should probably be off to the side somewhere.

The first three (well, maybe just two) are by far the most frustrating for me. As it stands, I find the whole thing completely unworkable, but if those things changed, I would only be very slightly bothered by the other issues.

Also, to people complaining about card size, I've always been able to use Command +/- to increase and decrease the size of the cards in the playtester, and that still works fine. (I'll admit that the default size on the new playtester does seem to be unusually small, though)

October 21, 2015 9:13 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #45

Space between cards is too big. That and the "snap" when dragging cards feels very clunky. Same with the tapping. Miss the old fluid motion of the old playtester.

Femme_Fatale says... #46

Dammit. Edit function is borked. I get ornithopters when I try and edit my posts.

The search function in the old playtester being right by the library was an optimal place for it. It felt right. Can't reorder your own hand.
