The symbols syntax thinks it's hilarious and won't show me how to use symbols

The symbol syntax shows the symbol on both sides of the column instead of text one side and symbol that text makes on the other. Im trying to get planeswalkers +1 and -1 loyalty symbols and I don't know how to put those in. 1) Help plz, 2) might be worth having a look at fixing?
